The Thing is one of the main antagonists of Those Nights at Rachel's.

Appearance[]

The Thing is a large and lanky black figure with a puppet like body, with four long and tiny fingers and no feet, but pointy ends where they would be. It has a white a somewhat oval-shaped head with a large, mischievous grin at the bottom of his face, lined with sharp teeth, dark purple “tears” on his face running down to his mouth, and angry eyes shaped dark sockets.

Behavior[]

The Thing hides behind the curtains inside a tall music box, which can be found in the backroom behind the office. The Phone Guy constantly reminds the player to never let the curtains fully open, since The Thing will escape from the box and head straight to the player's location to jumpscare them. It is one of the only animatronics the player cannot hide from, the other animatronic begin Ray the Raccoon.

On Night 1, The Thing is unnoticeably active, as the curtains will barely open by the end of the night, despite Phone Guy's warnings, however this is not the case in the Hard Mode version of the game. On Night 2 onwards, the curtains will draw open faster, making the player having the need to check the curtains more often.

Power Outage[]

If the player runs out of power, the player will no longer be able to close the curtains, but regardless of the curtains begin fully closed or not, The Thing will slowly rise from the inside of the box while a purple lights flickers and a music box plays. while they will still slowly open as normal. Staying in the office appears to delays its attack, and will jumpscare the player unless the night ends first.

Night 5 Cutscene[]

The Thing makes a special appearance in the Night 5 cut-scene. In their bedroom, the player will wake upon hear thuds and laughter resembling those of other animatronics approaching, and switch on the lamp. Their door will open and music will be heard, and the player will turn off the lamp and bury themselves deeper in the covers. The door will slam shut, and more laughter will be heard. The player will turn towards the lamp and soon be jump-scared by The Thing. They will then wake up in the Doug 'N' Rachel's office and realize the whole event was a dream.

  • The player's bedroom space is sparsely filled, the main decorations being D'n'R merchandise. A chair with an object on it, laced curtains partially covering the window, and the night-table with the lamp and a potted plant are all that are in the room.

Trivia[]

A line of code for The Thing's animation. Note the line "Nightmare Puppet".

  • The Thing's jumpscare in the Night 5 cutscene is one of the only ones that does not kill the player.
  • The Thing is the character with the most jumpscare animations in the game, with a total of three different animations used through the office, and four if counted an unused variation of the first jumpscare, and is the only character to be able to jumpscare the player from any view, with a total of 8 jumpscares excluding the power outage ones.

  • While the reason for the curtain to slowly pry open is mainly mechanical; it is not known why the curtains seem to open at quickening rates, this may a supernatural factor or due to faulty technology.
  • On Night 3 of the DEMO, which can be accessed by having a game save at night 3 from either the Full or Hard releases, The Thing will be the only animatronic active with the curtains opening just slightly faster, but it will not be seen active at the beginning of the night until some time has passed.
  • The Thing is one of the few character to have more than two versions of their character model always begin present and scattered around the map, the other begin Pete and technically Rachel.
  • The Thing, alongside Pete, Bane and Ray, are the only characters to have different eyes during normal gameplay in comparison of early footage.
